Understanding DIC Benefits for Surviving Spouses of Veterans

Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) is one of the most important financial benefits available to surviving spouses of deceased veterans. This monthly, tax-free payment is administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and provides critical financial support to families who have lost a loved one who served.
What Is DIC?
DIC is a monthly benefit paid to eligible survivors of military service members who died in the line of duty, or veterans whose death resulted from a service-connected injury or disease. It is designed to help offset the financial loss families face when a veteran or service member passes away.
Who Qualifies for DIC?
To qualify for DIC as a surviving spouse, you generally must meet the following criteria:
- You were married to the veteran for at least one year, or you had a child together
- You married the veteran within 15 years of their discharge from the period of service that caused their death (if the death was service-connected)
- You have not remarried, or you remarried after age 57
The veteran's death must be the result of either a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service, or the veteran must have been rated totally disabled by the VA for a certain period before death.
How Much Is the DIC Payment?
As of 2024, the base monthly DIC rate for a surviving spouse is approximately $1,612.75. Additional amounts may be available if the surviving spouse has dependent children, is housebound, or qualifies for aid and attendance.
How to Apply for DIC
To apply for DIC benefits, surviving spouses can submit VA Form 21P-534EZ online, by mail, or in person at a VA regional office. You will need to provide:
- The veteran's death certificate
- Marriage certificate
- Medical evidence linking the veteran's death to a service-connected condition (if applicable)
You can also work with a VA-accredited representative or Veterans Service Organization (VSO) who can help you file a claim at no cost.
