CHAMPVA Health Coverage for Surviving Spouses
The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) provides health care coverage for eligible spouses and dependents of veterans. Learn who qualifies and how to find official information.
What Is CHAMPVA?
CHAMPVA is a health benefits program in which the VA shares the cost of covered health care services and supplies with eligible beneficiaries. It is a comprehensive health coverage program, not insurance purchased from a private company, designed for the families of veterans who have been severely disabled or who have died from service-connected conditions.
Who May Be Eligible?
CHAMPVA may be available to:
- The spouse or widow(er) of a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled from a service-connected condition.
- The spouse or widow(er) of a veteran who died from a service-connected condition.
- The spouse or widow(er) of a veteran who was rated permanently and totally disabled at the time of death.
- Unmarried dependent children of an eligible veteran, under age 18 (or 23 if pursuing full-time education).
How CHAMPVA Works
CHAMPVA generally covers most health care services and supplies that are medically necessary. Beneficiaries may use any provider that accepts CHAMPVA. The program shares the cost of care, meaning beneficiaries may still be responsible for certain deductibles or cost-shares. In some cases, beneficiaries with other health insurance must use that insurance first.
How to Apply for CHAMPVA
Applications are submitted to the VA Health Administration Center. You will need supporting documentation such as the veteran's DD-214, marriage certificate, and disability rating information. A VA-accredited representative can help you understand the process at no cost.

CHAMPVA provides health care coverage during the beneficiary's lifetime. Private life insurance, by contrast, provides a death benefit paid to beneficiaries after the policyholder passes away. These two types of protection serve different purposes, one covers medical expenses while living, and the other helps protect a family financially after a loss.
Healthcare Covered, But What About Income?
CHAMPVA covers medical care, but it doesn't replace lost income. Protect your family's full financial future with a free insurance review.
